I'm usually quite afraid of chicks that could literally kick my trash, but for some reason Karen O seems to have me wrapped around her finger. When I heard that the Yeah Yeah Yeahs were dropping the electric guitars and picking up the electronic sythesizers, I was certain it was going to be a disaster. Call me a purist for wanting some sort of distortion and double humbuckers in punk rock. I'd been waiting for this album for what seemed like forever and had high hopes of redemption. You'll have to try it out for yourself, but I for one am a fan. Don't get me wrong, their next album better reconnect with their Flying V roots, but for now the keyboards will have to do.

Conan and The White Stripes

Conan O'Brian did his last late night show before moving to a different time. Everyone who really knows me knows I can't get enough of Jack White. For the way his fingers pull off those supernatural guitar riffs, and those wailin' pipes he's got on him. Meg, on the other hand, is a different story. Nonetheless, Conan picked for his last show his favorite band to have on, The White Stripes. The song isn't that great and Meg is well.....Meg, but it's the thought that counts and you can never see too much of The White Stripes.

Radiohead at the Grammy's

I hope you didn't watch the entire grammy's. There was only one redeemable thing about the whole show. So in case you missed it, Radiohead played with the USC marching band performing 15 step. The only negative...is that Colin, Ed and Phil are nowhere to be seen...

This next post is for a dear friend Aaron who is going through some tough times. After spending 10 wonderful years together, he parted with Martin and Logan this week. They treated each other so well and thought they would be together till the end. But upgrading is a double edged sword. One that twists going in and also out. My only consolation is that Johnny knows your pain, well kinda. We are all here for you. I only wish I could have kept them in the family..

Back when I was a wee lad of 17 years old a good friend Tom took me under his wing and introduced me to Mates of State for the first time, which he continued to do for years to come. I remember really liking what I heard, but when I bought the new album this past month I was expecting something different. The new stuff is much more mellow and inviting than the old. Or maybe it's just me. Either way, it's worth listening to. Has a good beat to bob your head to in the car. There are too many songs to list. Really, the whole thing is awesome. So slip it in and let me know what you think. The album is called Re-arrange us.

In A Mellow Mood???

Aaron intruduced Bon Iver to me a couple of weeks ago, and of course, it's been on everyone's list for top albums of the year. I must have missed it somehow. He told me he sits and just lets it play over and over while he works on the computer. I caught myself doing the same exact thing. I think the iTunes tally is up to 10 or so by now in a little under a week. The soft falsetto background vocals get me everytime. Mellow is the key word, reflective and relaxing. Nice for some background soothing. Take a bath, get a massage, really anything that doesn't involve movement and this is your music. I urge all to pick it up and listen 10 times, no 20, no 30....

Coldplay in SLC

Brandon came in from Montana and had this bright idea to get last minute tickets to Coldplay. Yep, top row. It was an interesting night. We spotted 7th row seats from up above and sat in them for an hour before the band came out. Coldplay arrived and we saw the first song from the 7th row.....then the true owners of the tickets showed up barely able to see straight with a Bud Light in each hand. We were forced to leave regretfully. Who shows up 2 hours late with $200 tickets???? We were peeved to say the least. So instead of our nosebleed seats we searched for another half hour before we found a decent view. They put on a mighty good show. More confetti than I've ever seen in my life, playing 2 songs from the stands, a Bono-ish platform where Chris Martin could frolic around burning hundreds of calories, and a truly amazing live sound. Sorry, the iPhone pictures didn't turn out so great. Cheers boys!!

The Black Keys

Sadly it was just a couple of months ago that I was first introduced to the Black Keys. Since then I have been wondering where they have been my entire life. How was it that I went this long without hearing them? It boggles my mind. I don't know how it slipped through. Attack & Release is the new album and it's great. Just two guys, a drummer and guitarist/singer. They make an incredible sound for just the two of them. I listened recently to a live recording and it is a totally different experience than the album. His voice is much much better on the disc, but his guitar definitely is in its prime in a live show. So listen to them both if you can. I'm including two songs so you can get a taste of their different styles. Enjoy! If you haven't heard them yet also, hopefully I helped in the process.

The Almighty Gibson SG

So I went into the music store the other day with the sound proof room to find some new obsession, and that I did. As far as Gibson is concerned, I usually gravitate toward the Les Paul models and tinker around a bit. This time I decided to try my chances with something new. I picked up a red Gibson SG...And I fell in love!! I think it's always been the shape in the past that has turned me off, it's a little awkward to hold, but my oh my did it have a good sound. So I found my new love for the month, and something I've just gotta have. It might take me 30 years but mark my words everyone, mark my words. Just incase your not fully convinced of it's total awesomeness I compiled a list of some cool dudes who play an SG:

So I was flipping through the radio the other day, which I rarely do, and something made me stop on U92. My how far R&B has come. I had sudden flashbacks of UB40 sitting in my room as a 10 year old. Brings back good memories. So I suddenly wished for the real R&B days. Everyone loves UB!!

Beck, Better than ever!!

I finally found an online music player that will post to blogger flawlessly, sorry for the delay. Beck has been around for a long while now and seems to age like a fine wine. There is only one Beck sound, it comes from the combo of guitars with the distortion and delay pedals he uses. I won't get into the nitty gritty....but it is absolutely unmistakable when you hear it. Modern Guilt is the new album and it highlights the drums on numerous songs. This just happens to be the best in my opinion. If he continues to make good stuff like this I'll follow him wherever he goes. Oh, and his hair is totally awesome...

Most Hated Artists

I'm having problems posting songs to my blog again and it's making me very irritated. So within that same vein, I decided to release some frustration by listing my most hated bands/artists of all time. The list is in order of hatred, but keep in mind that they could very well all be so horribly bad that an order is irrelevant.

1. Goo Goo Dolls-
Hard core rockers turned soft-hearted acoustic lovers. Every song ever played on the radio makes you want to bleed from the ears.
2. John Mayer-
The ONLY good thing he has ever done was cover Radiohead's "Kid A". I actually love the song but can't stand the man...
3. Kid Rock-
I think it's the greasy long hair and wife beater that does it for me. Don't get me wrong, anyone that can do country, hip hop, rap, bluegrass, metal, and pump out a ballad must be talented, right?
4.Lenny Kravitz-
When I was 14 I watched a special on VH1 about good ol' Len. I went to Media Play and bought his entire collection. I went home and listened to them all and threw the discs across the room. I've never felt more gypped. Eat it Lenny!!
5.Lynard Skynard-
If I say this in the wrong group I'm bound to be shot, but the old farts really get on my nerves. You write "Sweet Home Alabama" and all the sudden your the ultimate jam band. Sorry boys.
6. Creed-
This is a hard one for me. I really liked their first album when it came out, granted I was 15. I think they are probably the ultimate love to hate band.
7. Don't even get me started on the Jonas Brother, Ashlee whoever, Miley what-e-what's.

The Kings are King

First of all, I have to apologize for posting so far after my last. I've been trying to work out the kinks with Box.net but it appears they are no longer in business so my song sharing was put on hold.
It has finally arrived!! The new Kings of Leon came not a moment too soon. I was beginning to suffer from the lack of new music. Because of the Times was on my top 5 albums of the year in 06 and the new one definitely does not disappoint. Caleb is singing here a little more and the songs are a bit more generic but still have that unique KOL vibe. They play incredibly well live and if you'd like to check them out they played last night on Letterman. Youtube has a great version of it. It's going to take something really huge at year end to Knock the kings of the pedestal. Listen, love it, please let me know what you think....

New U2 Nov. 18th

It's rumored the new U2 album will be released on November 18th. The last record I listened to twice, and ONLY twice. They have been disappointing me as of late, but I hope for a redemption. You just can't deny they are the ultimate rock band, or were. Take us back to the old days boys!

Upon first seeing the members of Panic At The Disco for the first time, I thought it was an add for GQ. How could these pretty boys possibly do anything well besides pose for a camera? Well, it turns out they play pretty well also. I've listened to this album a ton and like it more and more. It's just good pop. If you need something mindless in the afternoon, this is your pill.

When I was 14 years old I fell in love with the 1969 Chevy Camaro. It was everything I thought a car should be. Sleek, smooth lines with gut wrenching power from the back wheels. It still makes me weak in the knees when I see one. Liza can attest to many hours spent calculating in detail the exact specifications of my "some day" rebuilt Camaro. In honor of the official release of the 2010 Camaro (which is just as gorgeous by the way) Kings Of Leon will help us usher in the excitement. Thanks to Aaron years ago for introducing this great band.

For some reason I just can't put this album down. The recording is supurb, along with his voice and incredible guitar skills. The Decemberists frontman tours the U.S. every now and again just by himself and his trusty guitar. Very stripped down and raw but very very worth the experience. He's a funny lookin' dude in real life but he's cool in my book. Wonder is the first song I heard and it caught me, but it's only the beginning.

It is only right that the first post should go to Radiohead. I broke out the B-sides disc the other day from In Rainbows and stumbled across my new favorite. Very simple, but moving. I caught myself listening over and over. If your not a Radiohead fan you should be! Get with the program people!
